Tai

Several weeks ago, we traveled to Puyo for a branch conference. Our mission has two independent branches (independent of stakes, that is) for which we provide direct leadership. You can enlarge the map by double-clicking on it. You will find Puyo in the province named Pastaza, to the north and west of the label "This is Ecuador." There are few settlements around it because it sits on the western edge of the Amazon Jungle.

As we arrived for the conference, we were met at the door by the sisters of the branch, who pinned on each of us a handmade flower-and-ribbon creation commemorating the date of the branch conference.

The highlight of the conference was the Primary Children's chorus, led by Sister Judd, from Arizona. She is musically gifted, and has opened the world of music to these children who otherwise might never receive any musical training. Sister Judd is in the second picture, in the brown shirt. She is leading the chorus by showing them pictures of what to sing.





In the picture above, the young man in the back row, second from he left, is Tai. Several weeks ago, Sister Judd and Sister Plata told me about Tai, and I was delighted to finally meet him. He is 11 years old and the only member of the church in his family. He divides his time between relatives in Puyo where he goes to school, and his home village which is several hours further east into the jungle (where there are no named places).




Tai is remarkable for his devotion to the gospel. As a consequence of being 11, he has no money. But he rides the bus from his village to the chapel in Puyo standing up for a couple hours because you can stand for free. He has also acquired a white shirt and tie, which he wears with pride. Tai will soon be old enough to be ordained to the Aaronic priesthood. I can hardly imagine the blessing he will be to his family, relatives, friends and the branch.
